Stephen Alfestus and Margaret Palmer Corker papers, 1859-1916.

The collection consists of correspondence and genealogy. The correspondence is mainly from Stephen Corker to his wife while he was a prisoner of war. In the letters he describes conditions of the prison, food, clothing, fellow prisoners, concerns for his wife, his son, and hopes for a prisoner exchange. there are also letters from Corker while he was a congressman in Washington, DC (1871). The other letters in the collection are from Margaret Corker to her son Frank and from her family and friends. Of special interest is a letter (18 August 1863) from Robert E. Lee to Mrs. Corker concerning the fate of her husband after the Battle of Gettysburg. This is a very important Lee letter (written by an adjuant but likely dictated by Lee). Transcripts of the letter are included.
